Step Away from the Nutella

I'm a big believer in momentum. When I'm on a roll working out, it's so much easier to get myself to the gym. When I am having a productive afternoon, I will cancel plans to make sure I can continue to get as much done as possible.

So it should come as no surprise that it easily swings the other way as well. Ever since I got back from Italy I have noticed that I have eaten like complete sh*t. Pizza, mexican food, candy- you name it. But what I noticed more than anything is that the more I ate it, the more I craved it. I saw a tv commercial for Taco Bell recently and actually thought about going to get a Cheesy Gordita Crunch- just ew. Two nights ago, I was craving chocolate milk, but we didn't have any chocolate syrup:

That was my "enough's enough" point. It's been fun, but it was time to get some veggies in my system. I went to the store and stocked up on fresh, natural foods. I had a veggie wrap for dinner last night and a fruit smoothie with spinach for breakfast this morning. AND I even bought vitamins! (I don't think I've taken a vitamin since the Flintstone days)

I can promise you that I won't be turning into one of those "Eat to live, don't live to eat" people any time soon (because let's be honest- those people are really missing out on one of the simplest pleasures in life and, in my opinion, are slightly batshit crazy), but I do notice a significant difference in how I feel when I maintain a healthy balance. I know my nutella jar will be missing me, but for the time being, it looks like it's just me and my veggie wraps:

Things I am Loving...

  1. This love lock print that I just ordered from Etsy. I learned about love locks from Elizabeth right before my first trip this summer and it became an all out obsession for me to search for them as we traveled. We found them in every single city we went to except for London. This photo is from Florence right by the Uffizi Gallery.
  2. Texting from my iPad. If you haven't downloaded iOS 5 yet, you need to! It has some really cool new features and I love being able to see when people are typing to text me back.
  3. The fact that I have a fun wedding this weekend in Houston! While I am nothing short of exhausted, I do love a good wedding and have hardly had any this year. It's my dad's best friend's daughter- so it won't be a college reunion or anything like that, but I already know it will be a gorgeous event and a chance to see family friends I don't get to see often.
  4. My halloween costume pieces are all ordered as of last night (hint: a faux booty was part of the order). Moose has had his costume for a couple weeks, but he is kind of a diva this year and ended up getting a second impulse-buy costume that I think I'm going to use instead. So now we just need a plan for the evening!
  5. This song from the Like Crazy movie trailer. The movie seems a little angsty, but it was apparently the darling of Sundance this year, so I guess we'll see if it lives up to the hype:

Firenze at Sunrise

We're home!

I pinky swear a full recap is coming soon. Until I get around to that, I wanted to share my favorite photo that I took while we were gone. Why are sunrises in foreign cities always so much prettier than our own?

Exciting News...

You may have noticed in my last post that my family all looked very happy in the final picture.  Well, I can finally let the cat out of the bag and tell you that...

I am extremely excited for my big brother and his wife. I know they are going to be great parents and it is going to be such fun for the rest of us as well!

When we went out to California, we were all a bit suspicious hopeful and of course tried to offer Whitney wine, etc to force a confession. {I know, I know... we're kind of jerks like that} Finally, they brought out two gifts for her and my parents. They opened a book of nursery rhymes that had an inscription on the inside that said "We thought you might be able to use this in April of 2012" with the sonogram picture. It was a wonderful way to kick off a great weekend of celebrating! It's the first grand baby on either side, so needless to say everyone is over the moon.

A few more photos from the weekend:

Glowing mother-to-be.

Dotty & Wayne
These two are no doubt going to be racking up some Dallas to Phoenix flights.

Natalie Laguna Beach
So excited to be an aunt!

Congratulations you two! I'm counting down the days to April already!

September in Pictures

Cooler weather and lots of celebrating- I couldn't ask any more from September! It was a fun one and I think October is looking pretty promising as well.

Girls dinner for Alex's 30th since I missed the official celebration in August.

Happy Birthday, dad! He has been wanting a Big Green Egg for ages and my mom finally broke down. She didn't love the idea because she thought it was ugly, but she has been converted as well. I have to agree with her- everything we've made has turned out delicious.

Pizza from the Egg. The ceramic construction basically makes it just like a wood burning pizza oven. We still haven't mastered sliding it on the grill gracefully, but we're getting there.

Sunday Funday at Katy Trail Icehouse. Have you ever had a Beerita?  They are pretty good!

Moose gives it two paws up as well!

It's hard to beat a lunch date with these two. Our waiter would not stop commenting on how beautiful Madi was. I have to agree- look at those cheeks!

I ran into an old coworker at the Loon. Ford used to man the grill at the golf course I beer bitched at drove the beverage cart at in college so spent many many weekends slaving away together at Shadow Hills Golf Course. Love this guy.

My favorite use for the iPad = fantasy football.

Add it to the list of shit that would only happen to me- I left a light on in my car and had to call my dad to help me jump it. Everything was attached properly and we were doing great until both engines started smoking and the rubber was melting off the jumper cables in oozing strands. I'm lucky we didn't blow both of us and the building up.

All the single ladies dancing at the ABC Premiere Party. The local station hosts a media party to show off previews for all the new fall shows. The party was "Pan Am" themed with girls dressed in Pan Am uniforms greeting you at the door, etc. It was very cute, but kind of a waste now that I hear rumblings that Pan Am isn't going to make the cut.

My girly night in was a huge success with lots of wine and pampering. Alex was finishing some post-move decorating when we noticed that my face kind of matched her new mirror. :)

My sweet friend, Tim, at dinner for his FORTIETH birthday! WTH, how do I have friends that are already 40?! Madness!

We finally got rain in Dallas. This was great news except the drainage holes in the balcony off my bedroom were plugged up. I came home to soaking wet carpet clear on the opposite side of the room from the balcony. Some fancy vacuum and three days of these commercial fans, and I was dried back out.

The water was still knuckle deep when I got home.

Nike Training Club is my new favorite exercise app. Holy smokes- it will kick your butt, literally. I only did about 10 minutes of this 15 minute work out and I was sore for days.

We took a quick weekend trip to Orange County in September to visit my brother's in-laws. Yes, my parents and my sister-in-law's parents get along so well that they visit each other. It's pretty cute!

Getting the tour of Balboa.

 Two peas in a pod.

Being goofy after a little wine our first night.

Italy Take Two

I realize this is a little crazy since I just got back from Europe and {aside from Paris} haven't even had the chance to do a proper blog recap of it yet, HOWEVER.... I'm going to Florence on Tuesday!  A last minute opportunity fell in my lap that I just couldn't pass up.

So please excuse the lack of posts for the next week! I will catch up with all of you when I get back next Monday!

Glass half full

Today has just been one of those days. The kind where nothing comes easy: you catch every red light, every road you turn down seems to have traffic or an accident, and you can't seem to be on time to save your life.

However, I am done with work and headed to happy hour with an out-of-town friend I haven't seen in four years or so. I can't wait to catch up with him and hear how he's been. Follow that up with a 30th birthday dinner for one of my favorites. And the cherry on top? Depending on what time dinner is over- Duran Duran with my favorite guy to attend cheesy 80's rock band concerts with, Mark.

Not a bad ending to an otherwise forgettable day!

Random Monday Musings

  • I love Mark Sanchez. Again, if you haven't read this article yet, please click the link and do so. Warms my little heart right up. However, as adorable as he is, he completely screwed my fantasy team this week. It's definitely not my first fantasy loss of the season, but I think it's my first loss that could have been avoided had I started different players. I would rather just lose pitifully than have my bench outscore my starters... grrr....
  • Moose wasn't acting like himself this weekend. And by "acting like himself" I mean eating. Last time I took him to the vet they told me that he needed to lose a quarter of his body weight. Needless to say, he loves his food. So obviously when he doesn't eat for two days I tend to get a bit worried. Therefore I did what any normal dog mother would do:
I took him to Petsmart and bought $30 worth of "cheer-me-ups".

And then I mixed scrambled eggs into his dog food.

Spoiled indeed.

  • I am a firm believer in absence makes the heart grow fonder. My favorite thing to do when I visit cities that I used to live in, is eat. I have a list a mile long in San Antonio and- believe it or not- Lubbock, Texas of restaurants that I always hit up when I am in town. Dallas lost one of it's neighborhood favorites when Terilli's burned down last year. Well, it reopened last month and we went back for the first time this weekend. I was very excited that even though the interior got a very fancy pants upgrade, the menu was the exact same. I had forgotten how much I loved those crab claws, italchos (yes, italian nachos), and chocolate martinis... mmm..... absolute heaven!
